Why Foster?

We always need fosters!

You truly save lives by fostering.

When you foster a dog or a cat for A Home of Their Own Animal Rescue, you agree to take them into your home and give them love, care, and attention until they find their forever home. By fostering a dog or cat, you free up a space in a shelter for another homeless dog or cat, which then allows us to take in another dog or cat from that shelter.

Ideally, all dogs and cats with AHOTO will live in foster homes.

We do work with private boarding facilities to house some of our dogs, which allows us to take in more dogs from high-kill shelters, but kennel environments can be very stressful.

Some of the dogs and cats have never lived in a home before, so they need to slowly adjust to a home life, including the people, and possibly other pets, that live in them.

As a foster parent, you get to know your foster pet’s true personality, which helps us find them the best possible forever home and set them, and their new family, on a path to success.

Additionally, you help your foster dog or cat adapt to living in a home and provide insight into what type of environment would work best for them—such as the need for a quiet home, whether they are good with children, and if they can live in a home with other pets or must be the only furry family member.

Another way fosters assist is by providing a home for animals that are recovering from an injury or illness. Those animals need more care than what can be provided in a kennel environment.

When you foster a dog or cat, AHOTO covers all medical costs. You provide them with food, treats, toys, attention, and love. If you foster a dog, we do ask that you attend at least two adoption shows per month, which allows your foster dog the chance for exposure to the public in addition to online presence and special events. We do not hold adoption shows for cats as adoption shows can be very stressful for cats.
